Sunkist and A&W Root Beer 10 review

We never drink soda anymore.  It wasn't something we sought out to do, it just kind of happened as we started eating healthy.  One of my favorites other than Pepsi is Sunkist and the Mr likes a good root beer.  So when we saw these 10 calorie versions, we thought we'd give them a try.  We both hate diet soda so we thought if we could have 10 calories worth (20 for the whole bottle) with decent taste the rare times we do want it, it would be all the better.

I don't like root beer period so that taste test was all him.  He took a drink of mine first then his.  He kind of cocked his head to the side so I took a drink of mine and put it down and said it was gross.  The diet aftertaste is very heavy.  I didn't have a high expectation for it anyway but man it would be nice to not drink my calories when I do want to pop a 'kist.

Here's the label info.  One bottle is 20 calories for each and mine was a little higher on sodium and I'm not willing to indulge in it at 210mg for the bottle.  The Mr's root beer was 130mg which wasn't as bad.

I think if you like diet soda, you would probably like these.  If you're looking for something that resembles the high octane version of the original, unfortunately you're not gonna find it here.

What diet soda do you think tastes most like the original or does such a beast even exist?

  1. Bummerrrrr... I was hoping you'd say these were heaven in a bottle! (yeah.. high hopes LOL!) I'm like you guys, my soda consumption just sort of waned and then stopped altogether on this journey. I also tried to find suitable substitutions but nothing replaces the taste of a good regular Pepsi or Sunkist. So for now, since I have it so rarely I just go ahead and enjoy the real thing!

  2. Diet Squirt is the only diet pop I've ever tasted that was very close to the original. But Squirt is one of those lemon/lime deals so that's probably why the taste wasn't as dramatic.

That's not to say I love diet (or even regular) Squirt (do they even make it anymore).

I've heard rumor diet Dr. Pepper isn't bad, either. But if I want Pepper I'll drink the real stuff.

  3. The only soda i'll ever drink is gingerale.. and that has such a strong ginger taste anyway it doesnt really have that funny diet taste.

My husband says my insides at 83, thats why I only like gingerale. lol

  4. I'm a diet coke girl through and through. It tastes nothing like the original though, I don't even like the original.

Diet 7-Up & ginger ale are pretty close I think, but since I don't mind diet sodas anyway I'm probably not the best judge.

  5. I always felt that Diet Dr. Pepper tasted pretty similar to the regular.

  6. I haven't had the "regular" version of soda in so many years, I don't even know what it tastes like! LOL

My job with the fancy pants soda machine company comes with free soda, so I do like to treat myself to a Diet Dr. Pepper or a Diet Barqs. Sometimes the vanilla version, sometimes not.

  7. I always hated diet soda as well, and when I would occasionally go off my beloved regular Pepsi (mostly to save money), I would drink water or iced tea. But after I began my "get healthy" journey back in 2009, I discovered Diet Squirt and I love it! I can even drink it when it's NOT ice cold, even if the ice has melted and it's diluted, I still love it. And I get NO diet aftertaste. I can drink a diet Coke or Pepsi, but it has to be ice cold or it's just yucky. I don't drink enough water, but don't scold me--I already know I should drink more WATER!

I also drink tea sometimes, sweetened with splenda or some such non-calorie sweetener (whatever is available at the restaurant), and I enjoy it as well. I hate to drink my calories, but 10 seems pretty low. And I see there's a new lighter Pepsi just out(NOT zero calories, but lighter--I've seen the ads on TV--which are hilarious--the baby is in the background doing all these miraculous things and all the mother sees and is gushing over and taking pictures of is the New Pepsi) which I might give a try. I'll have to see if I can find it at the grocery store and check out how many calories it actually has! I do NOT like diet orange soda of any brand, but I have found diet root beer to be pretty good. I tried some light lemonade a few weeks go and was not a fan of that either. I do think the diet products are far superior to the stuff I tried back in 1980 (the last time I lost weight before starting over in 2009).

Cammy@TippyToeDiet, you must work for the company that makes those amazing new soda machines I've been hearing so much about. People will probably want those in their homes--they sound very very cool. I asked my daughter-in-law who was a math major in college to come up with how many diffeent varieties of soda that you could come up with on one of them, but she ignored me. I haven't seen one, but she posted a picture of the "marvelous new machine" on Facebook.

  8. I don't drink diet, but if I did it would be diet Dr. Pepper. It's the one that I've found tastes the most like regular. I've cut down on my pop intake, but I allow myself one per week during my favorite TV show, if I choose to have one. Those times, I drink Pepsi Throwback. The real sugar makes a difference, don't let anyone tell you differently. I only wish Dr. Pepper would have the real sugar version out more often.

  9. I have to tell you I was pretty sad to see the end result of this post- lol! I was hoping you were going to say they tasted great! I'm happy you posted this though because I was always wondering how those "10 calorie" soda's tasted verse the regular and diet versions.

  10. I actually completely quit drinking soda over three years ago. It started out as one of my "fastbreak" goals and then as the months stretched into years and I quit even thinking about it, it has kind of become a little challenge with myself! LOL I want to keep that streak alive just to prove I have *some* kind of willpower! hahahaha

But I have to say the ONLY diet beverage I have even been able to tolerate for even a second is Diet Dr. Pepper. Tastes as close to the original as I've ever encountered. But I've never tried Coke Zero or the newer ones. So I'm basing that off of 3 years ago! hahahaha

  11. I love Diet Squirt, Diet 7-Up, Diet Mountain Dew, and Diet Sprite (although that one is just "okay"). I think the citrus sodas do a good job of masking the "diet aftertaste"; plus, the regular versions of those sodas are WAY too sweet for me anyway.

  12. I'd love to try these, but we don't have them! I'm a sucker for my coke zero :(

  13. I have moved to seltzer water. I like all the Polar flavors. They are just carbonated water and natural flavor, no chemicals, so I am good with that. I have lost my taste for soda as well, and don't like the 'diet' taste!

I remember Orange and Grape soda from my kid days :)

  14. I very rarely have any kind of soda but I love vanilla coke and root beer as well as a good cold Dr Pepper every now and then. Unfortunately this just didn't live up to the promise. I have heard that there is a new product out that is like half the cals and all the flavor so I might have to try that but it would never be something I would drink all the time. I love water too much now, honestly!

  15. I can't do diet at all - maybe it was years of having my mother subject us to Diet Shasta Cola stuff - yuck, yuck and double yuck. One of my friends tries to get me to do Diet, but I would rather do water. I have tried the Coke Zero, but not liking it more and more. However, I do like Diet Dr. Pepper. As of late, if I have a soda it is only when I go out to dinner, but have to limit it to a small and for sure no refill!!

  16. I'm so with you--I hate the taste of diet soda. I would rather splurge once in a while on the real thing instead of drinking something that tastes like crap everyday! ;)

  17. We've really only ever had diet sodas in my house since I was really little (very rarely ever had it). So if I am going to have a soda I'll pick diet pepsi or diet dr pepper but I usually stick with water. I didn't even know diet had an aftertaste! I think regular pepsi is NASTY! It makes my teeth feel gritty!

  18. Yeah I think I'll stick with my full octane Pepsi once or twice a year. I really wanted to love this but...blech.

I might try the Pepsi Next uh...next hoping I could get the same taste with less calories but I think if we get a 6 pack the rest will go to the Mr's work.

  19. I'm with you...water most of the time, the real thing when you really, really want a soda.
